Congresswoman Johnson applauds the National Science Foundation’s funding award for Southern Methodist University. The award of $2,549,462 was granted to Southern Methodist University’s Simmons School of Education to Simmons faculty member and TI Endowed Chair in Education, Leanne Ketterlin Geller, and researcher, Lindsey Perry. This award will be used for the Discovery Research K-12 program to develop measures for testing math skills in numeric relational reasoning and spatial reasoning.
"I am very pleased that the National Science Foundation has selected Southern Methodist University to receive this award," said Congresswoman Johnson. "These funds will help Southern Methodist University increase their support to education worldwide, especially in an area where the achievement gap is wide and needs attention."
The award will assist teachers and schools in screening students to spot who is at-risk for challenges in math education at early ages. The measures will also provide information about the amount of support needed for a particular student
